“messy, loud, beautiful motherhood”

You’re Allowed to Love Your Life and Still Need a Break

Being grateful and overwhelmed can exist at the same time.

Let’s talk about something I think so many parents feel but don’t always say out loud.

You can absolutely love your life and still need a break from it.

You can love being a mom, adore your children, appreciate your home, and feel incredibly thankful for the life you’ve built… while also feeling completely exhausted by it all.

And you know what? That’s okay.

Some days, the house is loud before you’ve even finished your first cup of coffee. Someone needs a snack, someone can’t find their shoes, someone is asking a million questions, and you’re already mentally running through everything that needs to get done.

The laundry is piling up, the calendar is full, and somehow everyone needs something from you at the exact same time.

It’s beautiful. It’s chaotic. It’s exhausting.

And sometimes, you just need a minute.

The Weight

I think one of the most exhausting parts of parenting isn’t always the physical work. It’s everything happening in our heads.

The appointments to remember. The school events. The sports schedules. The grocery lists. The birthday parties. The endless reminders.

It’s thinking about tomorrow while you’re still trying to get through today.

And even when you finally sit down, your mind doesn’t necessarily slow down with you.

As parents, we spend so much time making sure everyone else has what they need that we sometimes forget to ask ourselves the same question.

What do I need today?

Not what needs to get cleaned, organized, scheduled, or crossed off the list.

Just… what do I need?

Maybe it’s a quiet morning. Maybe it’s an uninterrupted shower. Lunch with a friend, a walk outside, or simply sitting on the couch without feeling guilty about everything you could be doing instead. (I’ve been doing more of that)

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference.

You Don’t Have to Love Every Moment

We’ve all heard it.

“Enjoy every second. They grow up so fast.”

And while I understand the meaning behind those words, I think they can unintentionally put a lot of pressure on parents.

Because the truth is, not every moment is enjoyable.

There are tantrums, arguments, sleepless nights, messy kitchens, overwhelming schedules, and days when your patience feels like it’s hanging on by a thread.

And that’s real life.

We can appreciate how quickly childhood passes without feeling guilty for wishing bedtime would come a little sooner on a particularly exhausting day.

We can recognize how special these years are without pretending they’re always easy.

You don’t have to enjoy every moment to love the life you’re living.

I think that’s something more parents need to hear.

Taking Time for Yourself Isn’t Taking Away From Your Family

Somewhere along the way, taking a break started feeling like something we had to earn.

Finish the laundry first. Clean the kitchen. Answer the messages. Get everything organized.

Then maybe, if there’s time left, do something for yourself.

But here’s the thing.

There will always be another load of laundry. Another dish in the sink. Another task waiting for tomorrow.

If we keep waiting for everything to be finished before allowing ourselves to rest, we may never actually get that break.

Rest doesn’t have to mean a weekend away or some elaborate self care routine.

Sometimes it’s putting your phone down and enjoying a coffee while it’s still hot.

Saying no to plans because your family needs a slower weekend.

Letting the dishes wait and choosing to sit outside for a little while.

It’s learning that your needs matter, too.

Not more than everyone else’s. Not less.

They matter, too.

Finding Joy in the Chaos

I love the beautiful chaos of family life.

The laughter, the inside jokes, the random conversations, the excitement over little things, and the way an ordinary day can turn into a memory you never want to forget.

But I also believe we’re allowed to want moments of peace in the middle of it all.

We don’t have to choose between being present parents and being individuals with our own needs, interests, and feelings.

Both can exist.

And maybe finding balance isn’t about having everything perfectly organized.

Maybe it’s about knowing when to embrace the noise and when to step away from it.

When to make the memories and when to enjoy a little quiet.

When to say yes to another adventure and when to stay home in pajamas.

A happy family doesn’t have to be a constantly busy family.

A good parent doesn’t have to be an exhausted one.

A Little Reminder From One Parent to Another

If you’re in a season where life feels extra busy, where everyone needs something and you’re struggling to find a moment for yourself, I hope you remember this:

You are allowed to slow down.

You are allowed to have boundaries.

You are allowed to ask for help.

You are allowed to take a break without explaining why you need one.

And you’re allowed to love your life while admitting that some days are just plain hard.

One day, we’ll probably look back on these busy years and miss the noise, the little voices, and the everyday moments that once felt so overwhelming.

But that doesn’t mean we have to exhaust ourselves trying to appreciate every second of them right now.

We can love this chapter while still making space to breathe.

Life isn’t about doing everything perfectly or keeping everyone happy every minute of the day.

It’s about finding the joy in the middle of the mess, giving ourselves a little grace, and remembering that we’re people, too.

So take the break. Drink the coffee. Enjoy the quiet when you can. And then jump right back into that beautiful chaos.

It will all still be there waiting for you. 🤍

One chapter at a time.
